Geographisches Kolloquium am 01.06.2015: Environmental refugees? Conceptual considerations and empirical insights on the migration-environment nexus

19.05.2015

Dr. Patrick Sakdapolrak (Department of Geography, University of Bonn)

Using the case of the contested term „environmental refugees“, the talk provides an overview and a critical reflection of the relationship between migration and the environment. The following questions will be addressed: What are environmental refugees? What assumptions and interests are hidden behind the concept?

How can we grasp the complex relationship between migration and the environment? The talk will illustrate different aspects of the debate based on empirical case studies from East Africa and South-East Asia and will show that a change in the conceptualization of the relationship is needed in order to grasp the complexity of the phenomenon.
