Urban borderlands and borders drawing process in Guangzhou, China

Under the rapid urbanization, dramatic socio-spatial transformation has been occurring in China. The residential boundaries as spatial manifestation of social inequity have been widely drawn in contemporary cities. The emergence of new form of fragmentation is marked by a patchwork of different residential enclaves that gated communities, migrant enclaves and work-unit (danwei) compounds juxtapose in the city. Referring to shifting focus recently on urban borderlands in urban studies, my research concentrates on the urban borders drawing process and the flexibility of borders.
